H&M India’s Country Manager, Janne Einola, recently told the Press Trust of India: "We have 3,500 people working for the retail company and we would hire 800 more this year." This will constitute a large increase in the brand’s India workforce.

Although Einola did not give a figure for the number of brick and mortar stores the brand would be opening, he assured that the brand would maintain its current pace for store openings, saying: "Last year we have opened 17 stores and I would continue the same pace this year. It would also depend on the availability of real estate at the locations where we want to go." Cities that are next on H&M’s list include Mysore and Ahmedabad and more stores are planned for Mumbai and New Delhi.

H&M, which managed to break even during its first year in India, will be concentrating on Tier 1 and 2 cities for the moment. While there is not yet talk of opening in Tier 3 locations, the launch of the brand’s online store last week will however mean that customers in more rural areas will now have greater access to the brand.
