Gaurav Gupta, famous for his art-inspired gowns and technical work, started off as a fashion student in London over 13 years ago. He has now become one of India’s most well-known modern couture designers and is using this platform to raise the issue of sustainability in the fashion industry, as well as in everyday life.

Recently, Gupta collaborated with AD Singh and Vogmask on the Anti-Pollution Riot Campaign. This campaign raised awareness about the effects of pollution on the environment and gave tips on how to live a more eco-friendly life.

Gupta is currently applying these tips to his own production processes.

“More than 25 percent of the pollution in this country is to do with waste disposal. There is no waste management here," said Gupta.

In order to combat this, all of the plastic used in Gupta’s Noida factory now comes from a packaging solutions company based in Bengaluru that specialises in biodegradable plastic. Moreover, all of Gupta’s fabric scraps are recycled.

Gupta has said about his production process: “It’s a small step, but I’m at least getting conscious of my own, and my company’s, carbon footprint… So even if I’m buying soap for my house, I’m getting it from an organic shop that doesn’t use plastic to pack it. Small things like that. That’s how a culture changes.”

As sustainable fashion becomes a greater part of the Indian fashion industry’s consciousness, backed up by government initiatives, it is likely that more designers will follow suit.
