GJEPC to add Common Facility Center at Kerala to boost jewellery production

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is planning to add a Common Facility Center (CFC) at Thrissur to give a fillip to jewellery production in the country.
The new facility will have the latest technology and infrastructure that will help small units from the state produce quality, modern jewellery pieces.
India known as the world's second largest gold consumer is now looking to strengthen its exports and focus on designs to become competitive in the international market. The industry is targeting Gems & Jewellery exports worth US$ 60 billion by 2022.
The Gems and Jewellery sector is undergoing a transitional phase as there is a change in consumer preference due to western influences. International and domestic consumers demand for unique jewellery designs has grown which makes it imperative for jewelers in India to deliver in order to survive in the competitive market.
“To achieve our vision of US$ 60 billion gem & jewellery exports by 2022, we need to provide this industry with the best possible infrastructure and modern facilities which would be beneficial especially to small units across the south region of the country,” GJPEC Chairman Praveenshankar Pandya said in a statement.
Pandya added “Thrissur being a major jewellery cluster it would be apt to set up a CFC here, this would definitely enhance quality and production of jewellery in the entire Southern region.”
The Commerce and Industry Ministry of India had set up a similar facility in Karnataka earlier this year to provide small scale jewelers to required infrastructure to create unique and cutting edge jewellery designs.
