Flipkart grosses more than Amazon yet again in festive season sales, high hopes for end of year turnaround

As revenue results come in for the first of the festive season sales battles, Flipkart has come out on top for another year after taking in over 5,000 crore rupees in revenue during its Big Billion Days sale, markedly ahead of Amazon.
After an impressive taking of over 5,000 crore rupees (approximately 752 million dollars) over their latest e-commerce sale festival entitled “Big Billion Days”, Flipkart has high hopes for its end of year revenue total. Amazon came in second, the same as last year and their revenue total was markedly less than Flipkart at between 2,500 crore rupees and 2,700 rupees (approximately between 376 and 406 million dollars). Despite this, their “Great Indian Festival” sale was still a big money generator. On the other hand, Amazon remained ahead in numbers for both app and desktop visits and so Flipkart’s sales victory may be less clear cut than first appears, especially as both Flipkart and Amazon calculates revenue figures differently.
Electronics were big sellers for Flipkart. However, Flipkart’s sales figures also include those of Jabong and Myntra, its fashion portal, whereas Amazon’s just include its own sales. Manish Tiwary, the Vice President of Category Management at Amazon India debated the figures and said: “Amazon.in remains the largest marketplace and the fastest growing one in Indian e-commerce landscape. The recently concluded Great Indian Festival has been our biggest shopping event till date with a remarkable spike in customer acquisition from tier II and tier III cities across India, with 85% of new customers coming from these areas. We saw a tremendous customer response across categories—from high-value products such as smartphones and appliances to everyday essentials such as shampoos, biscuits, and pet supplies.”
Flipkart spokespeople have also asserted that they had made more money than reports are stating and are heralding the success of the sale. However, despite disagreements over exact figures, it is clear that e-commerce boomed over the sale season as a yearly growth of around 25% for the e-commerce sector is now expected.
