Flipkart claims to be biggest e-commerce player in India

Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has claimed to be the biggest e-commerce company in the country stating that it is bigger by 40 to 50% than the second player in the market.

Flipkart which is involved in a bitter fight with Seattle based etailer Amazon has said that the cash burn by the latter is having no impact as Flipkart continues to hold a dominant share of market in India.

Amazon had recently invested Rs 2900 (approx ($443 million) in November 2017 to gain a larger market share in India’s fiercely competitive e-commerce market and is expected to pump in $3 billion more over the next 3 years.

Flipkart with the backing of investors like Softbank is unperturbed with Amazon’s spending prowess as it claims that it is way ahead of competition.

“People in the market are burning 2.5-3 times more money than us. I don’t even know how they get by with this. Despite that, we stand at least 40-50% bigger than the second player in the market,” Flipkart’s CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy was quoted as saying in an interview to the Times of India.

Flipkart and Amazon over the last few months have both been making claims of being the dominant e-commerce player in India. Last month, Amazon India had claimed it outperformed Flipkart in the fashion segment for the October & November period, further claiming it was the fasting growing marketplace in the country for 2017.
