Flipkart India’s smartest company, says MIT Technology Review

India’s largest e-commerce firm Flipkart was the only Indian company to feature in the list of the ‘50 Smartest Companies 2017’ by MIT Technology Review, one of the world’s most influential tech magazines.

Flipkart was ranked 36 on the world’s smartest companies list, which had its bitter rival in India, and global e-commerce giant, Amazon at the 3rd spot.

The list was topped by Nvidia, a leading player in deep learning and autonomous vehicles. The list also included other global powerhouses such as Adidas, Microsoft, Alibaba, Tesla, Facebook, and Apple.

“This is fantastic recognition of Flipkart’s tech leadership position and the progress we’ve made towards our mission, which is to transform commerce in India through technology. In the past decade, Flipkart has pioneered India-specific innovations which have not only led to the adoption and rise of e-commerce in India, but have also become standard global tech solutions. We’re honoured by the recognition from such a well-respected global tech voice,” CEO, Flipkart, Kalyan Krishnamurthy said in a statement.
 
The annual list celebrates the top 50 companies globally that best combine innovative technology with an effective business model.
 
“The companies on the list combine a high level of technology innovation with a business model that will help them make the most of it,” Nanette Byrnes, senior editor for business said in a statement. “Public and private, large and small, based in countries around the globe, this group of companies is creating new opportunities and pouncing on them. These are the ones that competitors must follow.”

Flipkart is constantly upgrading its technology and investing heavily to take on global rivals like Alibaba and Amazon to remain relevant in the Indian e-commerce market.
