Fashion, shoes and accessories firms are leading the growth of the franchise sector in Spain. According to the report ‘Franchising in numbers 2017', the latest edition of an annual report from Mundofranquicia, the number of new fashion brands represents almost 10% of the companies operating under the franchising business model in the country.

The disappearance of chains and store closures were reduced to a minimum in 2016, according to the analysis, and the creation and expansion of new brands has been consolidated to a large extent thanks to the boost from fashion-related sectors.

Last year in Spain there were up to 96 fashion and clothing networks with 5,323 franchised stores, in addition to 22 for footwear, 799 for handbags and accessories brands, five jewelry brands with 270 linked establishments and three sports brands with 80 outlets, according to the study.

Globally, the retail segment experienced the greatest growth with 2,004 new openings and a total of 30,772 outlets, 48% more than the previous year. Retail also had the highest average of franchises per brand, with 94 units each, overtaking service and catering sectors.

On the other hand, employment generated by the chains did not show much of an increase, which was attributed to the net growth of the sector itself,  at 13.52% of retail trade employment in the Spanish market.
