Mar 19, 2018
Saira Aslam’s new start-up business, D for Darzi, aims to promote the Indian tailoring industry and will be launching online later this month.
D for Darzi (meaning tailor) will be launching online in late March with a website that will facilitate the ordering of custom tailoring in an affordable and easy to use way. The business, which is based in New Delhi, will allow customers to order tailor made garments by inputting their measurements online and thus circumventing the need to visit a tailors to order custom clothing.
The business has already collaborated with the beauty influencer Blossom Kochhar and has a collaboration with the activist designer Sanjana Jon in the works. The aim of D for Darzi is to support the tailoring industry by paying a fair wage for work in an industry that is known for its underpayment of employees.
On March 18, the business held a community event in New Delhi to engage potential customers and educate them about the brand’s ethos. Women of all ages and backgrounds were invited to model for the brand and collaborator Kochhar said at the event: "I thought having community ambassadors for the photo shoot was a great idea as it would ensure participation of women and men from diverse backgrounds. The students and trainers from Blossom Kochhar College of Creative Arts and Design did the make-up hair of all participants of the community initiative. I wish D for Darzi that seeks to help the poor tailoring community of the Indian subcontinent, all the best in future."
