At Chennai airport, around 1,228 square metres has been allotted for retail outlets in a new development that will see clothing, jewellery, and beauty brands set up shop at the international airport. Other store categories will also be included such as electronics, books, and medicines. The international terminals have been allocated 720 square metres of space and the domestic terminals have been given 503.93 square metres respectively.

The Airports Authority of India is currently in the process of identifying a firm to be responsible for setting up the retail outlets and choosing appropriate brands. The contract will last for seven years and will be given to the highest bidder. As it will be the winning bidder that is responsible for bringing in the brands to the airport when appointed, no brands have been named as yet.

Online applications for the bidding process will officially open in a few weeks. The date had to be postponed due to a glitch in the online application process but, according to officials, this will be sorted soon.
