The Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) has dropped the cotton output estimate by 7 lakh bales (one cotton bale weighs 170 kg) for 2017-18 due to pink bollworm attack on cotton crops across leading cotton producing states in India.

CAB lowers cotton output by 7 lakh bales for 2018

CAB had earlier set its cotton output estimates of 377 lakh bales; however less output from states like Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh due to the attack has forced them to reduce it to 370 lakh bales.

The new cotton output estimate set is still higher by 7 percent as compared to last year wherein the total year’s output was 345 lakh bales.

Textile commissioner Kavita Gupta to increase the production of cotton in the country and prevent pest attacks has recommended adoption of global practices and sought invention of the Ministry of Textile in this matter.

“Indian farmers need to adopt global practices such as adequate spacing between plantations, avoiding bushiness, etc,” Gupta was quoted as saying by the Financial Express.

Indian farmers have been suffering huge losses resulting in reduction of cotton produce from the country over the last few years due to massive pink bollworm attacks across the country.

Meanwhile, The Cotton Association of India (CAI) also has set similar estimates for the cotton crop for the ongoing 2017-18 season. They expect it to be at 365 lakh bales (of 170 kg each), which is higher by 5 lakh bales from its own previous estimate set in May.
