BigBasket to launch private label cosmetics brand

The online fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) store BigBasket plans to launch a private label beauty brand which will mark its entry into the category.

BigBasket’s CEO, Hari Menon, has announced that the business will launch its own cosmetics brand. At the same time, he also mentioned that BigBasket will start selling fresh meat on the platform as it works to expand its product portfolio beyond its current staples of groceries and toiletries.

“We are adding a new private label under the new category of beauty products. We are going to have a lot of private-label play there,” Menon told Livemint. Although BigBasket does carry a number of items in the category, this will be its first own-brand entry into the beauty market.

Menon explained that, along with launching a private label, the business will be bringing in more beauty products from other brands too. “We will not just have a private label [for beauty], but also normal labels, imported stuff, etc. Basically a new set of categories that you will see in beauty. Earlier this year, BigBasket raised $300 million from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd which has provided the capital needed for these new projects.
