The state government of Assam has said that it will soon introduce a new textile policy to produce and market handloom products for the global market. The policy will work towards boosting the handloom and textile industry of the state. It will integrate production and marketing of textile items, empower weavers and create a niche market for handicrafts.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal delivered the news, while reviewing the activities of the handloom and textile department. He also directed the department to set up a state of the art emporium showcasing unique and attractive fabrics of all communities of the state shortly, according to an official statement by the government.

Sonowal has asked officials to design a strategy for showcasing handloom items at the India-International Textile Summit, which will be held in Gujarat in July. The CM has also urged the department to make strategies for empowering weavers from rural Assam and motivating young entrepreneurs to trade in the sector.

He also encouraged planning for chain-linked exhibition system that will cover all the districts of the state to market handicrafts.
