Amazon India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh’s Khadi and Village Industries Board to facilitate selling clothing and other products made from the traditional and sustainable Khadi textile on their e-commerce site. The Mou was signed by the Khadi and Village Industries Board’s CEO Avinash Krishna Singh on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh Government and Amazon India’s Seller Services Director and GM Gopal Pillai on behalf of Amazon.

As part of the MoU, Amazon India will educate, train, and enable rural Khadi producers to sell their wares directly on Amazon’s Indian e-commerce site under the “UP Khadi” brand. Products including kurtas, dhotis, shirts, and towels are all planned. "Khadi- India's signature fabric has seen a new wave of acceptance from customers in the last few years," said the Khadi and Village Industries Minister, Satya Dev Pachauri, who expressed high hopes for this partnership.

"We believe that e-commerce is the best way for the thousands of weavers and artisans who bring this craft to life to reach customers across not only this country but the world,” said Pachauri. “We are happy to partner with Amazon India to support the digital journey for these artisans, expand their reach and boost employment for the sector."

The Indian Government has long been championing Khadi as part of their “Make in India” campaign, making the textile GST exempt and tying up with a variety of businesses to increase its distribution. The partnership with Amazon is also part of the “Digital India” initiative that aims to make more Indian made products available online.
