Using its unique techniques of blending together silk, cotton, wool, and metal, Akaaro has created its first ever stand-alone collection of sarees since its launch in 2010. The collection represents the brand’s restrained, contemporary aesthetic and is designed to be a modern take on the saree.

“As a garment the saree has a unique heritage which creates its own challenges and limitations for a designer,” said Gaurav Jai Gupta, Akaaro’s founder. “We have to be understanding towards the cultural significance of the garment as we bring a contemporary interpretation to it. We have adhered to an extreme rigour throughout our design processes, experimenting with textures whilst keeping the integrity of the saree intact. The end result reflects a contemporary take of the saree without straying too far from the history and culture- it is like staging a modern contemporary interpretation of a raaga.”

The launch event will feature an informal walk-through by Jaya Jaitly, a textile revival activist and author. The sarees comprise textile techniques picked up from working with weavers in Phulia, Varanasi, and Chanderi and contribute to keeping these traditions alive.

“Though sarees are not something usually retailed at Bungalow Eight, we thought it would be a loss for Bungalow Eight not to be a part of this,” said Bungalow 8’s creative director, Maithili Ahluwalia. “This collection interprets the saree in a way that is not only modern and global but also dynamic and innovative.”
