After Myntra, now Flipkart to scale up hiring in technology

Indian e-commerce major Flipkart is following in the footsteps of its fashion subsidiary Myntra as it looks to strengthen its technology department by hiring over 700 personnel.

Flipkart had stopped hiring amidst slowdown in the e-commerce sector and due to losses incurred. However with the Seattle based Amazon investing heavily in technology in India and Alibaba backed Paytm making inroads in the e-commerce market, Flipkart has finally decided to strengthen its technology department.

The e-commerce giant had stopped hiring for two years and on the contrary was laying off staff due to slowdown in the industry, but of late with technology becoming an important area all etailers including Flipkart are looking to hire in this space.

Myntra has already taken a lead in this space and has set up a small office in Silicon Valley by partnering with a local technology firm there from where it plans to train its staff back home in the technology department.

Flipkart has said that it has over 700 open positions and the majority of these are across functions in the technology department —data scientists, UI & UX designers, product solution engineers, tech program managers, software developers, IT infrastructure & service delivery and IT applications.

“Flipkart is aggressively hiring in tech functions. Over four fifths of all current open positions at Flipkart [are] for technology functions,” confirmed a spokesperson for Flipkart to the Economic Times, adding that the “aggressive tech hiring is part of the company’s ‘AI for India’ programme, which leverages Flipkart’s strengths in tech and data to build scalable AI-powered solutions for the country”.
